- Summary
- Many external constituencies such as governments, parents, trustees, and alumni, hold institutions of higher education (IHEs) accountable for the way they expend their resources. This research examines whether optimal levels of production are conceivable for IHEs by considering them through the theoretical lens of the resource-based view of an organization. This lens examines the key outputs of higher education, here operationalized as graduates and knowledge, and identifies the inputs necessary for their production---the allocation and distribution of financial, physical, and human capital. The study employs data envelopment analysis (DEA) to discover the optimal allocation and distribution of those resources necessary to achieve optimal levels of output. This methodology allows for the comparison of similar IHEs, here demarcated as public, four-year universities with high or very high research agendas, to help understand why some institutions outperform others from a production standpoint and inform academic administrators as to how they might strategically allocate their resources to optimize graduate and knowledge output.
