Summary
A study of Lilith's Brood by Octavia Butler in light of the implications of implicit bias that illustrates avenues for unearthing underlying bias (assumptions/beliefs) pertaining to difference which could impact and reshape individual and community well-being throughout the planet. In her post-apocalyptic narrative, Butler illustrates an exploration of difference and a consideration of a new humanity for the human survivors in which their survival depends upon their ability to change their perceptions on difference, to see their interconnectedness with the ecosystem, and to move toward their merging with the aliens, the Oankali. Butler challenges the idea of a human contradiction and then proposes a strategy for adaptation and evolution beyond the contradiction, describing the benefits of a significant mental shift in order to help humans to unearth their underlying beliefs related to differences for the welfare of the world.
