Scope/content
The William Dellenback Collection contains correspondence, notes, clippings, and other manuscript materials documenting Dellenback's life and work before and after he began working at the Institute. Dellenback was hired by Alfred Kinsey as his staff photographer in 1949 to document the work at the Institute for Sex Research, as well as to photograph sexual material in other collections. In 1954 he photographed dozens of pre-Columbian (Moche) ceramic vessels during a trip to Peru with Alfred Kinsey; most of these pieces feature sexual content such as depictions of anal sex, fellatio, and masturbation, as well as childbirth and human genitalia. Although the WIlliam Dellenback Collection primarily consists of images of Alfred Kinsey, his staff members and family, and Institute visitors, the collection also includes portraits of other Indiana Univeristy faculty and campus views, as well as prints produced earlier in his life when he was a commercial photographer in New York.
