- Original ms., written in 1787, was first published in 1930 as: Les infortunes de la vertu. Sade expanded the original text, publishing it in 1791 (in 2 vols.) as: Justine, ou, Les malheurs de la vertu. In 1797, an expanded version (4 vols.) of the 1791 ed. was published as: La nouvelle Justine, ou, Les malheurs de la vertu, which was accompanied by a further six vol. set relating the story of Juliette, ou, Les prospérités du vice.
